WI 49th Inf Co D. Residence: Scandinavia, Wisconsin. Born 22 Jun 1841 at Gjerpen, Norway, son of Rasmus and Dorothe Bestul. Came to America in 1853 with his parents and his grandfather, John Gromstul. Civil War: Enlisted. Promoted to Corporal. Discharged from the service 27 Jul 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. Post war: Married on 26 Apr 1868 to Maren (Kvie) Nelson. Twelve children. Started a sawmill in Helvetia, Wisconsin. Died 6 Jun 1930 at Iola, Wisconsin. Buried in Zion Cemetery, Iola.
