Came to America with his parents, four brothers and a sister in 1851. Norwegian name Bersvendsen changed to Swenson. Civil War: Enlisted for one year on 8 Mar 1862 at Stephenville, Texas. Reenlisted for three years or the war on 20 Dec 1862 at Camp Salmon, Texas. Corporal. On wagon guard to Austin, Texas, from 20 Apr to May 1863. Express to Colorado from 31 Jun to Oct 1863. Regimental record indicates that on 18 Mar 1864 he deserted from a camp near Bastrup. Reported to have returned by 4 Aug 1864. Record shows that he was sick at Brenham hospital on 30 Oct 1864.
