Born 22 Aug 1838 at Vasrud, Oiers Prestegjeld, Gudbrandsdalen, Norway, a son of Gudmund Olsen Sonstehage and Kari Torgersdatter Hole. Civil War: Age 21. Unmarried. Enlisted for three years on 4 Dec 1861 at Scandinavia, Wisconsin, and mustered at Madison, Wisconsin, 20 Dec 1861. Designated Corporal. Appointed Sergeant on 1 Feb 1862. Sick in Chattanooga, Tennessee, 7 Oct 1863, also 28 Nov 1863. Wounded in a hand at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, 21 Jun 1864. Mustered out with I Company at Chattanooga on 10 Feb 1865. Post war: Died at St. Lawrence 21 Apr 1867. A stone reading “John Wasrud –1867” is in Scandinavia Lutheran Cemetery Sect. I Row 15, Scandinavia, Waupaca County.
