Sami

May 16, 2009 to spring 2010 • Main Building, second floor

The Sami people of northern Scandinavia—sometimes called Lapps or Lapplanders—have a distinctive culture that is uniquely adapted to the environment. Traditionally, some Sami communities have managed reindeer herds, while others have relied on fishing for their primary livelihood. Today, this indigenous population numbers approximately 70,000 across Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia.

In conjunction with the theme of Nordic Fest 2009, Northern deLights, Vesterheim will share images and objects from the museum collection that offer an introduction to Sami culture.
