Support Vesterheim's Folk Art Education Program

For over 40 years, Vesterheim has nurtured folk artists and encouraged excellence in Norwegian-American folk art by providing classes with master instructors from Norway and America, by organizing study tours to Norway, and by offering an annual judged exhibition in which artists can present and sell their work.

Many elements contribute to the high quality of classes at Vesterheim. The instructors are the best in their craft; the museum’s vast collections, which inform and inspire students, are second to none; and the facilities offer a quality learning environment. These all combine to create an educational experience that becomes a cherished memory. Students and teachers are drawn to Vesterheim to enjoy the camaraderie of learning together in an inspired setting. One student commented that the best thing about a class at Vesterheim was “taking a break from the ‘real’ world and creating a wonderful project.”

Vesterheim’s study tours to Norway offer folk artists a unique learning opportunity based on the museum’s ties and relationships with the artists and institutions of Norway. Participants learn from leading Norwegian artists, surrounded by the beauty and traditions of this inspiring place.

The folk-art experience at Vesterheim doesn’t end with classes. Vesterheim continues to support artists by offering The National Exhibition of Folk Art in the Norwegian Tradition. Through this exhibition Vesterheim sets the standard of excellence as an artist in the Norwegian folk-art traditions. This program is vital for promoting folk artists and serves to ensure that these beautiful age-old traditions and skills are preserved.

Vesterheim is committed to carry on this remarkable program, but in order to keep it affordable and accessible, we need your help. The expense of the program—especially the cost of bringing master instructors from Norway—can be quite high.
