Mini-Classes in Decorah
Vesterheim mini-classes are designed to introduce a variety of traditional
folk arts to beginners. All mini-classes are on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m.
to noon. No experience is required.
Cost: $35 per person, or $30 per person if two or more people from the same
family sign up. There may be a small fee for material.
To sign up for mini-classes, call Vesterheim at 563-382-9681. Payment and reservations are due no later than one week prior to the mini-class to assure materials are available.
Students are asked to check in for the class at Vesterheim’s Folk-Art Supply Shop in the Westby-Torgerson Education Center at 502 W. Water Street, Decorah, Iowa.
Hedebosøm
with Roger Buhr

Hedebosøm is a form of needle lace which originated in Denmark but is
also widely done in Norway. Learn some of the basic stitches and how
to make
a snowflake sun catcher.
Roger Buhr taught courses on hedebosøm at the John C. Campbell Folk School
in Brasstown, North Carolina, in the summers of 2003 and 2005.
Tapestry Weaving
with Judy Shuros

In this class students will do picture weaving with a handheld loom.
Judy Shuros is a spinner, weaver, felter, and knitter. Tapestry and rug weaving are her
specialties. She is a member of the Oneota Weavers Guild in Decorah, Iowa.
Rosemaling Rogaland Style
with Ruth Green

Learn Norwegian decorative painting in the Rogaland style.
Ruth Green is an established Rogaland painter, and has numerous publications
that are available in the Vesterheim folk-art supply shop. She is a
Certified Decorative Artist with the Society of Decorative Painters and
is known
for her workshops at their conferences.
Ornament Carving Workshop

Rebecca Hanna
November 8
Learn to carve holiday ornaments from wood.
Rebecca Hanna is Scandinavian American, but only began pursuing her
heritage as a student at Luther College. She is an elementary-school
teacher at
South Winneshiek School, and is very active in the Decorah Sons
of Norway chapter.
Hanna is a ribbon winner in Vesterheim’s National Exhibition of
Folk Art in the Norwegian Tradition.
