Lifelong Learning
Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum offers a variety of educational opportunities for students of all ages.
Barnetimen is an extraordinarily popular monthly activity hour for preschool children. An immersion program for fourth graders uses the museum’s collections to bring the daily struggles and accomplishments of American pioneers vividly to life. The Afterschool Program for area fifth and sixth graders captures the imagination of children, teaches them about their place in the world, and inspires them to build a promising future based on the promise of the past.
Vesterheim's classes in folk art and culture for adults and children are famous for producing some of the most accomplished artists working in the Norwegian tradition. Elderhostels at Vesterheim give adults a week-long introduction to Norwegian art and culture and rare behind-the-scenes glimpses of museum operations.
Tours to Norway explore architecture, folk art, traditional costumes, food, customs, and the country's breathtaking scenery.
Each year, thousands experience Norwegian culture at Vesterheim's annual events like Nordic Fest.
Finally, the museum's extensive volunteer training program not only turns out superior guides, but also provides an unparalleled educational experience for the general public who are invited to attend the session.
