Elvis Meets Inga: Lista and the Setesdal Valley
June 28-July 8, 2008
Norwegian emigrants traveling back and forth between Norway and America from
the 1940s through the 1960s brought home American architecture, automobiles,
and Brooklyn flair—even Elvis posters! In contrast, the neighboring valleys of
Setesdal and Telemark still maintain strong folk traditions that celebrate regional
heritage.
The guides for this tour are Arnhild Hillesland and Siv Ringdal. Hillesland has a Ph.D. in Norwegian language with minors in history and folklore from the University of Tromsø. Ringdal is a cultural historian from Lista, Norway. She has published the book Det Amerikanske Lista and has been responsible for three exhibitions about emigration and repatriation.
