Collections Intern

Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum seeks a summer Collections Intern. The intern will be involved with a grant-funded project to enhance the museum’s online collections platform. The intern’s role in this project will be retrieving and re-storing artifacts for photography. The intern will also be involved with collections tasks, such as inventory, condition reporting, research, data entry, and cleaning collections storage areas.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of Past Perfect and art- or artifact-handling experience. They must show attention to detail and be accurate and organized. They should be self-motivated and able to work independently. The individual will be part of a team that includes staff and interns, will perform other related duties, as assigned, to support the work of the grant project and the museum, and attend relevant meetings as requested.

Wage: $8 per hour for 25-30 hours per week (weekdays) for a total of 300 to 375 hours. The hours will begin on or after June 1 and be completed on or before August 28, 2020.

Location: Located in Decorah, Iowa, Vesterheim is the national Norwegian-American museum and heritage center. The collection that began in 1877 has grown into one of the most comprehensive museums in the United States dedicated to a single immigrant group. Vesterheim’s exhibitions explore the diversity of American immigration through the lens of the Norwegian-American experience and highlight the best in historic and contemporary Norwegian folk and fine arts. A staff of 31 oversees the institution, its 33,000 artifacts, twelve historic buildings, Folk Art School, library, and archives. The museum has more than 5,000 members and has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1970.
