Collections Photographer

Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum seeks a temporary full-time Collections Photographer. This six-month position will fulfill the goals of a grant-funded project to add photographs to the museum’s online collections platform. The person in this position will stage, take, and edit photographs of artifacts in the museum’s collection; gather and edit information for descriptions; upload content; and carefully manage records in multiple databases and formats.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. Experience with studio photography and Past Perfect is preferred, as is art- or artifact-handling experience. They must show attention to detail and be accurate and organized. They should be self-motivated and able to work independently. The individual will be part of a team that includes staff and interns, will perform other related duties as assigned to support the work of the grant project, and attend relevant meetings as requested.

Wage: $13 to 15 per hour commensurate with qualifications and experience for a total of 1040 hours. The work may begin on or after June 1 and must be completed on or before December 30, 2020.

Location: Located in Decorah, Iowa, Vesterheim is the national Norwegian-American museum and heritage center. The collection that began in 1877 has grown into one of the most comprehensive museums in the United States dedicated to a single immigrant group. Vesterheim’s exhibitions explore the diversity of American immigration through the lens of the Norwegian-American experience and highlight the best in historic and contemporary Norwegian folk and fine arts. A staff of 31 oversees the institution, its 33,000 artifacts, twelve historic buildings, Folk Art School, library, and archives. The museum has more than 5,000 members and has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1970.
