North Sea to South Seas—Norwegian Sugar Cane Story Program in Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Vesterheim is teaming up with the Sons of Norway Restauration Lodge #548 in Cedar Rapids and everyone is invited!

Kate Martinson, retired Luther professor and Vesterheim volunteer and trustee, will give a presentation North Sea to South Seas: Norwegian Sugar Cane Story at the Sons of Norway meeting on Tuesday, July 11, at 7:00 p.m. The event will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 3634 1st Ave., Cedar Rapids. (Near Lindale Mall and across from Fareway Grocery Store.)

A little known chapter of the Norwegian-American immigrant story is of the Norwegians who became owners and workers within the exploding sugar cane industry on the island of Kauai in the late nineteenth century. This presentation traces the push and pull factors of their move from the North Sea to the South Seas and the challenges those immigrants faced.

Dessert will be served. The event is free, but please help us plan with an RSVP by July 7. Contact Karla Brown, Vesterheim Development Event Coordinator — 563-382-9681 x107, or kbrown@vesterheim.org.
