Vesterheim is celebrating all things fiber! As a kickoff to the special exhibit, Koselig (opening at Vesterheim on December 1, 2017), we would like to invite all handwork/fiber art enthusiast to a new monthly gathering, called Håndverksted (pronounced hond-verks-ted). Håndverksted is a Norwegian word that describes a time for neighbors and friends to get together for a few hours and work on their handwork or crafts with a cup of coffee and conversation.
This new opportunity is for anyone—non-member or member, new to fiber arts or experienced. Bring your ideas or fiber project in progress to our koselig (cozy) room at the Bruening Visitors Center. What can you bring?—Weaving, spinning or spindling, knitting, crocheting, quilting, needle felting, nålbinding, embroidery, whatever you’re working on that can be carried with you. Leave your stress behind—creating with your hands in community with others is known to be a great stress reducer and good for the soul. Check out the fun and lively conversation once or several times. No formal classes will be offered.
This idea is inspired by the Scandinavian tradition of gathering together in cozy workshops or homes to work on handwork or fiber projects for everyday home use. These gatherings allow those weaving, spinning, knitting, and doing embroidery to enjoy the company of others, learn from each other, and perhaps get a little assistance with a two-person task.
The closest translation to koselig is cozy, but it’s more than that and includes a feeling of warmth and contentment. During the exhibit, Vesterheim will share many ways to experience this Scandinavian way of living. Visit the exhibit to find out how Norwegians define koselig.
