Presentation "Beer and Wine in Norse Culture" by Eirik Storesund

August 9, 2024 | 6:00 p.m.

Location: Pulpit Rock Brewing Co., Decorah

Join Vesterheim and Eirik Storesund at Pulpit Rock Brewing Co. for the presentation Beer and Wine in Norse Culture.

In popular imagination, the Viking appetite for destruction was only rivaled by their thirst for liquor. But how did parched Norsemen actually quench their thirst? We all have an impression of what that looks (or even tastes) like, but how much of it is true? Was mead a common beverage? What about other beverages? Did ancient Scandinavians drink wine, or even mixed drinks?

Swing by for an informal talk on the surprising (and potentially sordid) selection of the ancient and medieval Scandinavian liquor cabinet!

Eirik Storesund is a Norwegian writer, artist, and independent scholar of Old Norse philology based in New York City. He is perhaps best known for running the blog and podcast Brute Norse. His research interests cover drinking culture in the Nordic Iron Age, religious experience, ethics, and taboos in the Viking and Medieval Nordic Area, and the reception of Norse heritage in contemporary culture.
