Shan Rayray has taught Hardangersom for the Scandinavian Cultural Center at Pacific Lutheran University and for her Sons of Norway Lodge in Tacoma, Washington. Shan is a council member at the Scandinavian Cultural Center who helps with the collection’s Hardanger embroidery collection. She has been serving as president of Embla Lodge #2, Daughters of Norway since 2023.
Shan learned the art at a young age the traditional way from her aunt when she was visiting from Norway. Her aunt spoke only old Norse and no English. Since then, Shan has made numerous pieces and provided restorative repair work for others. She has demonstrated Hardangersom at the Washington State Fair. Her work has placed four times at the Washington State Fair and was part of the Socially Distanced, Creatively Connected exhibit at Vesterheim in 2021.Â
