Lois Mueller is a music-teacher-turned-rosemaler, which helps to explain the many violins she has painted. She began rosemaling in 1977 and teaching rosemaling in 1979. She received the Vesterheim Gold Medal in rosemaling in 1998. Since that time, she has written nine rosemaling instruction books. She has taught in Canada, Taiwan, and throughout the United States. She has also mentored three apprentices through a program with the Wisconsin Arts Board. She is one of the founders of Rosemaling Coast to Coast, chairing the organization since its inception as well as coordinating its two national conventions.
