Since Syttende Mai is nearly here, there are often visitors on campus wearing their Norwegian folk costumes. Everyone loves to tell the story of their own bunad. If you see someone wearing theirs, ask them about it!
Find out more about bunader in this video presentation with Barbro Tronhuus Storlien about Norwegian folk costumes. Norway has a variety of more than 450 different folk costumes, some of which have intricate embroideries. Many of the folk costumes are easily recognizable while others are more unknown. Storlien talks about the differences and similarities between the Norwegian areas, shows some of the techniques, and raises the important question – how do we keep this knowledge alive for future generations?
Storlien is a certified maker of folk costumes, who, in addition to having her own studio, teaches the art of embroidering and assembling folk costumes. Learn more about Barbro Tronhuus Storlien.
