A class in making decorated green-wood shrink boxes, led by Jögge Sundqvist, an internationally known craftsman from Sweden, is just winding up, and there was nothing shrinking about the fun students have had, as these photos show.
The shrinkbox, or krympburkar in Swedish, is made from a hollowed out green tree branch, which is then notched at one end, where the bottom, carved from dry wood, is inserted. If done correctly, the green wood will ‘shrink’ around the dry bottom, making the container waterproof, thus the term shrinkbox.
