Collections Connection: Nordfjord Rosemaling Bowls with Patti Goke
In this recording, Vesterheim Gold Medalist and long-time rosemaling instructor, Patti Goke highlights Nordfjord-style rosemaling design throughout objects from Vesterheim’s collection. Often the decorated pieces found along the West Coast of Norway are labeled as West Coast paintings. But many of the areas from Bergen to Alesund have developed regional styles. One such area is Nordfjord, especially around Gloppen. In this presentation, Patti explores this style that was painted mostly on drinking bowls, of a particular shape, and often with an inscription of a drinking verse.

Collection Connections is a series of Vesterheim-hosted conversations between the museum’s collections staff and folk-art school instructors. Highlighting the incredible folk-art collection at Vesterheim, these conversations are also opportunities for you to stay connected with your folk-art community. Each gathering will highlight a piece or two from the collection as explained, interpreted, and appreciated by a master folk artist.
