Exploring Møre og Romsdal Style Rosemaling with Nancy Odalen
Find out about the various examples of rosemaling from the area known as Mǿre og Romsdal Fylke (County) in Western Norway in this video recording of a lively conversation with Nancy Odalen, Vesterheim Gold Medalist and recipient a Vesterheim 2022-2023 Folk Art Residency grants. Odalen showcases examples from the Vesterheim Collection and from the museum in Romsdal. In Nils Ellingsgard book Norwegian Rose Painting in America, he commented, “Romsdal was a center of commerce and trade; as such, it was an intermediary for different cultural impulses.” During this presentation, we learn about the areas of Nordmǿre, Sunnmǿre, and Romsdal, which are all part of Mǿre og Romsdal, and how their rosemaling was influenced by painters from Hol, Hallingdal, and Gudbrandsdalen, among others.
