A Folk Art Conversation with Rosemaler Marit Nelson

March 19, 2023 @ 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Living Traditions: A Folk Art Conversation with a Vesterheim Apprentice

Sunday, March 19 | 1:00-2:00 pm CT

Location: Online on Zoom

Join us for a conversation with 2021 Vesterheim Folk Art Apprentice and Kurtich Foundation scholarship recipient Marit Nelson about her travels, studies, and current work as a rosemaler. With topics ranging from spending time with Norwegian artists including Anne Hesvik and Mona Erlandsen to how Marit shares rosemaling with online audiences through creating social media videos applying traditional rosemaling stroke work as face paint, this conversation will inspire artists and folk art lovers!

Marit has deep roots in Decorah, all the way back to the 1800s when her ancestors arrived from Norway.  She is currently a singer and entertainer at The Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia. When she’s not performing, she loves dipping her toes in every craft she can find. She has been rosemaling since middle school and was the recipient of a study trip to Norway in September 2022, funded by a Vesterheim grant, learning from Norwegian artists in their studios and researching historical folk art.
