Seven Summers Exhibit Closes

May 27, 2024

This exhibition features plein aire paintings from Bøverdalen in the northern part of Gudbrandsdal, Norway, by artist Arna Rennan and closes May 27, 2024. Be sure to visit before it ends!

In addition to being a visual delight and endless challenge to the painter, this area tells the story of husmenn (cotters), folklore, and emigration. The paintings feature both the harsh and rugged mountain landscape with the impossible perches where servants and tenant farmers lived and raised large families, along with paintings of the prestigious larger farms such as Roisheim that show the contrasts in living situations.

Stories and folk songs collected from tradition bearers, including the shepherd sisters from Brimi farm in Garmo, are shared in the gallery. The harsh and extreme beauty of the area inspired music, poetry, and an imagination toward the supernatural or hidden folk.

Arna Rennan is a painter and musician who received her training at the National Academy of Art in Oslo and at the Institute for Folk Culture, University of Telemark in Rauland. Her perspectives are formed through art and music as they present themselves historically. As a Norwegian and American citizen, she incorporates both perspectives in her work and presentations. Rennan has given cultural presentations, concerts, and exhibitions at significant venues in the Midwest and beyond. Her artwork is recognized both in Norway and the Midwest and is part of public collections.

This exhibit is made possible by a generous gift to the Vesterheim Annual Fund from Barbara and Dale Henning.
